AVAN IVAN - REVIEW

It looks like Bala has lost his stuff. Right from the beginning, the filmmaker has been getting through the same pattern of films. He has a shocking climax and lots of brutal murders, which has been an unavoidable factor. Oops! ‘Avan Ivan’ is a clichéd drama that has a flimsy writing and poor narration.
As we mentioned earlier, it has nothing special and moreover it turns out to be a collection of Bala’s previous movies. It is very much evident with the characterizations. Vishal has somehow managed to do something special and he is better than his previous movies.
The film has nothing special about the story and it doesn’t exceed more than a line. It is about two half brothers –Walter (Vishal) and Kumbudren Saamy (Arya). Though they are raised in the lineage of drama groups, they are indulged more into house breaking thefts. They love their Zamindar Highness (G.M. Kumar) as their father and keep roaming around with him. Everything moves so smooth and happy until an unexpected shock hits into their lives.
Vishal’s effort to keep himself as a squint-eyed youngster and voice modulation need special mention while Arya with the hair style of Vikram in Pithamaghan isn’t evoking interests to the senses. The opening sequence where Vishal dances as a woman requires tons of praises. But he is more off artificial touch. G.M. Kumar reminiscences of Raj Kiran in ‘Nandha’… RK’s presence is more unwanted and is purposely added to bring violence and tragedy. Why did he take up such unwanted offers is a billion dollar question. But he proves his acting skills to the extent in the climax.
Yesteryear actress Ambika deserves attention for her performance while the leading ladies – Madhu Shalini and Janani Iyer are wasted.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s musical score is a mere disappointment as none of the songs catches up our attention except ‘Rasathi’. Cinematography by Arthur Wilson is the only convincing point here.
Bala must stop beating the same bush if he has plans to keep his position retained in Tamil film industry.

DHEIVA THIRUMAGAL - REVIEW
Star-casts: Vikram, Anushka Shetty, Amala Paul, Sara, Nasser, MS Bhaskar, Santhanam and others
Banner: UTV Motion Pictures, Rajakaliamman Medias

From the maker of ‘Kireedom’, ‘Poi Solla Poram’ and ‘Madharasapattinam’, here comes ‘Deiva Thirumagal’, a film loosely based on Hollywood movie ‘I am Sam’, ‘Rain Man’ and ‘My Left Foot’. Director Vijay managed to give hat-trick with these movies and comes up with a genre different from his previous ones.
‘Deiva Thirumagal’ has a brilliant performance by Vikram while rest of the other actors has indeed excelled with her acting skills. Produced by Mohan Natarajan of Rajakaliamman Medias, the film is released by UTV Motion Pictures with 250 prints across the globe. The film features Vikram as a person with 5-yr old mental capacity while Anushka as a lawyer and Amala Paul in a grey-shaded character.
Krishna (Vikram) has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. He works at a Chocolate Factory near a village in Ooty. He has a daughter Nila (Sara) while his wife Banu passes away while giving birth to her. But as she reaches age 5 herself, Krishna’s limitations start to become a problem at school. The relatives of Nila take her away, and Krishna runs for the help from Anuradha (Anushka Shetty), who hasn’t handled any case till the date… In the process, he teaches her a great deal about love and relationship.
Vikram is the show stopper here as he makes sure that he doesn’t leave any stones unturned. His performance is brilliant though it’s inspired from ‘I am Sam’ Sean Penn. There is nothing in particular to speak about his emoting gestures as his acting throughout the film is marvelous. Anushka as his lawyer, who later learns a lot of values about life from him is really a worth watch. She might gain some awards for her performance. In fact, she proves that she is capable of performing a better role than being simply depicted as a glam-doll as in previous movies. Amala Paul has nothing to perform here and her presence is patently for the sake of adding attraction to the film that there are two hotties in the film. Nasser is extraordinary with the performance while Santhanam leaves us in splits with his comedy tracks. MS Bhaskar does his role with perfection.
Director Vijay has blindly copycatted many scenes from Hollywood and international films. He follows the same tactics all throughout his career as it is more evident with his previous movies. Of course, some of the scenes really irks us for its replica. The duration becomes the major drawback as the screenplay for 2hours 45minutes doesn’t really carry a substantial content. In fact he keeps repeating the same sequences now and then.
Musical score by G.V. Prakash is good and does work some magic for the visual enhancements. Not to forget about the songs that are so dulcet and appealing to the ears. The cinematography by Nirav Shah is tremendous while Anthony’s editing is mild and perfect.
On the whole, ‘Deiva Thirumagal’ has nothing promising in particular, but can be watched only for performances of artists. But then, you need not spend so much money for this particular reason as the film might be very soon aired in some satellite channels.
Director Vijay must learn about spinning some profits for his producers and so should Vikram for his main focus has always been his salary and winning awards.

Rajini's health is better now...
Deepika Padukone
Scores of admirers thronged at the Chennai airport and outside Rajini’s house with pooja thalis and garlands to welcome their idol and star.
"It's crazy over here in Chennai. As soon as news spread that Rajniji is returning, all of the city got ready to give him a resounding reception," a source told a daily.
Excited about Rajini’s return, fans told NTDV, “He is our God and we are so lucky to see him after two months. Our leader please come for a corruption free society."
Rajini’s wife Latha and daughters Soundarya and Aishwarya escorted him from Singapore.
Rajini missed his fans and family
According to sources close to Rajinikanth, the veteran superstar missed his fans and kin a lot during his stay in Singapore.
Though the doctors had advised him to rest for some more time in the foreign country, Rajini, who was not able to stay away from his homeland any longer, flew back to Chennai Wednesday night.
A source close to Rajini revealed, "He missed home. He missed his friends, family and fans. He insisted on returning now.”
It’s heard that Rajinikanth will be residing in his farmhouse, which is close to to Chennai, for about a month.
Shelved ‘Rana’ likely to go on floors in September
Gossipmongers have suggested that though Rajini is back in Chennai now, doctors have asked him to take rest for one more month before starting off with his work.
It’s learned that the superstar’s shelved project ‘Rana’ is likely to go on floors in September.
Bollywood hottie Deepika Padukone, who has been signed in for ‘Rana’ opposite Rajini, has assured the veteran legend that she will be available for the shooting of the film, whenever required.
"Deepika has assured the superstar that she will be there to shoot whenever he's ready to do so," said a source.
The source further added, "She won't do any Tamil film until their film together is completed. This is her way of showing how much a film with India's greatest screen idol after Amitabh Bachchan matters to her.”
